The State Board of Elections and county boards of elections in North Carolina took home 5 of the 32 awards in a national competition recognizing best practices in election administration.

Winners of 2023 Clearinghouse Awards, or “Clearies,” from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission include the State Board of Elections and county boards of elections in Alexander, Beaufort, Brunswick, and Wake counties. The Durham County Board of Elections received an honorable mention.

Ben Hovland, Chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, joined the State Board of Elections’ meeting remotely Tuesday to congratulate the State and county boards on the achievement.

“I don’t know if it’s something in the water, but you all are doing great work,” Hovland said. “It is really something to be proud of to have so many winners in North Carolina.”

Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board, said this recognition shows that N.C. election administrators are forward-thinking and value the importance of educating voters about how elections work.

“Team 101 — 100 county boards and the State Board — will continue to innovate and work hard to ensure accessible, secure, accurate, and transparent elections in North Carolina,” Brinson Bell said.
