Court Extends Voter Registration in 36 Counties

Within the past hour, Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens ordered that the regular voter registration deadline be extended.

Within the past hour, Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens ordered that the regular voter registration deadline be extended until close of business on Wednesday (Oct. 19) in 36 counties receiving assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

“Our agency appreciates Judge Stephens’ thoughtful consideration of this matter and will fully comply with his order,” said Kim Westbrook Strach, State Board executive director.

The deadline extension will be in effect in the following counties:

  1. Beaufort County
  2. Bertie County
  3. Bladen County
  4. Brunswick County
  5. Camden County
  6. Carteret Count
  7. Chowan County
  8. Columbus County
  9. Craven County
  10. Cumberland County
  11. Currituck County
  12. Dare County
  13. Duplin County
  14. Edgecombe County
  15. Gates County
  16. Greene County
  17. Harnett County
  18. Hoke County
  19. Hyde County
  20. Johnston County
  21. Jones County
  22. Lenoir County
  23. Nash County
  24. New Hanover County
  25. Onslow County
  26. Pamlico County
  27. Pasquotank County
  28. Pender County
  29. Perquimans County
  30. Pitt County
  31. Robeson County
  32. Sampson County
  33. Tyrrell County
  34. Washington County
  35. Wayne County
  36. Wilson County

In the other 64 counties, the regular voter registration deadline ends today. Would-be voters may still register and vote at the same time during the 17-day early voting period, which begins Thursday (Oct. 20) and runs through Nov. 5. 

Same-day registration is available during the three-week period after the regular registration deadlines,” Strach said.  “We encourage those displaced by Hurricane Matthew to take advantage of same-day registration opportunities throughout their county.”
