RALEIGH, N.C. — The Fourth Circuit today reinstated same-day registration and out-of-precinct voting ahead of the General Election in November. A divided panel ordered the lower court to enjoin enforcement of new election procedures that eliminated same-day registration and required that a voter cast her ballot in her properly assigned precinct. Judge Diana Gribbon Motz dissented.
“We are concerned that changes so close to the election may contribute to voter confusion,” said Executive Director Kim Westbrook Strach of the State Board of Elections. “More than 4 million voter guides have gone to the public with information contrary to today’s decision.”
An appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is expected as soon as tomorrow. Voters are encouraged to stay informed of further developments.
