Recounts may have been requested for county ballot items. County boards of elections required to conduct the recounts shall notify the candidates, parties, media and this office of the date, time and place of the recount so that the candidate or a representative, along with any interested person or group, may be present if desired. Notice of recounts will be posted on the State Board website.
SBE contact person regarding recounts is Johnnie McLean (johnnie.mclean@ncsbe.gov).
Recounts for ballot items should be scheduled to take place between Friday, May 18, and Tuesday, May 22, and be completed by Tuesday, May 22 at 1 p.m. Upon completion of the recount, results should be released in the same manner as the official canvass. Hard copies of results should be immediately sent by overnight delivery to the NC State Board of Elections; 441 N. Harrington Street; Raleigh, NC 27603.
If the results from the recount are different from the official canvass, a detailed explanation of the difference must be submitted with the recount totals. It is imperative this office receives a hard copy of the abstract of the recount, by whatever means necessary, no later than 5 p.m. on May 22 in order for the State Board to certify statewide results on May 23.
Please review G.S. § 163-182.7 and G.S. § 163-182.7A, 8 NCAC Chapter 9, and Precinct Uniformity Project Report Chapter 4, and the related checklist for the applicable procedures for recounts. For assistance please email helprequest.sboe@ncsbe.gov or electsystems.sboe@ncsbe.gov.
